A Fool’s Proof

This was Scratchworks’ first professional production created in 2013. It was devised by the company with mentoring from Rhum & Clay Theatre Company and Sarah Wilson-White.
Supported by the Bike Shed Theatre, the show toured until 2015.

Trapped in a well shaft for 56 hours, a little girl waits to be found. Above ground, three journalists chase the story every step of the way, framing it for media consumption and spinning it wildly, erratically and erroneously away from the truth.  Inspired by true events, A Fool’s Proof searches for answers and scatters accusations as the rescue mission struggles on.

Scratchworks presents a performance inspired by the true story of the 18 month old Jessica McClure, who in 1987 was trapped for 56 hours in a Texan water-well. Using sharp new writing, imaginative tomfoolery and earthy folk music they scrutinise the media’s editorial power over public perception. An original production, it combines a variety of inventive physical and visual storytelling methods, including movement, puppetry, clowning and live music.
